2000 2300 V Steering

I have 2000 2300V limited that has slack in the steering. As an example, when you turn to the left, it take a couple of inches before the wheel gets tight and actually turns the rudder.. anyone had this issue before? could be the cable or something in the helm?

Gumby, thank you for the response! i have been afraid to even open it up and look! lol i will make that a fall project, its not that big of a deal just annoying really!
thanks again and i may get with you when i dive in! where do you get the parts for the swap out?
