shiftingf / Neutral Problem

I have a 20i (2003) this morning I was taking a"light cruise" and I noticed on the way back into my boat lift the boat was Creeping forward while in neutral. I secured the boat ( in the water ) took off the shifting cable and with the boat at low idle I seem to have about Half way in forward gear. When I very slowly go toward reverse I can get the shaft to stop spinning forward about one thousanths of an inch before reverse engages ( but way out of the neutral detent) does anyone out there know anything about the "velvet drives" Model 10-17-004??
I may have fried clutches??
I would appreciate any feedback..

it sounds like you have a little fwd creep in there. it could very well be warped clutches. have you had any slipping or fluid problems?

Oh no... I have that problem too, creeping that is.

Tige MD, I do have a slow leaking of fluid and the occasional slip when fluid gets low. I've had my 2001 21i for 2 seasons and have only had to fill three times. I had a local shop look at it and they could not find any leak. Sound like you may know what it is?

shifting / Neutral Problem

I am going to contact Tige again today ans see if they can put me in touch with someone at Borg Warner( Velvet drive) and ask the question
" can this be warped/damaged/worn clutch plated OR considering that I can get it to stop spinning very close to reverse engaging, is it maybe a Valve Problem" I will Post My Results of this query..

if you slipped the clutches they probably warped. if you have a small leak and can't find it try this. have someone else steer the boat while you watch the transmission. in gear at idle look around the shift lever, it may take a few minutes, look close because the transmission is black. also check around the output shaft seal, cooler line fittings and look at the bottom of the transmission bellhousing. the leaks we see most are in this order, shift spool o-ring, input shaft seal, output shaft seal, and cooler line fittings. for repairs you will need a rebuild approx. $800.

Is this something most places can find and fix?

Like I mentioned, the first place I took it to couldn't find anything, and the Tige dealer in my area is not know for giving good service. I'm probably going to have to take it to the Mastercraft dealer.

it's not that hard to find, but it is a little hard to fix. you will need to find a mechanic worth his weight to rebuild it. my lead tech and i are self taught. we had two smoked tranni's here a few years ago, on a slow winter day we decided to see what made those thing tick. next thing we knew they were rebuilt and working perfectly. since then we have done a dozen or so. it does take 1 special tool. the rest is pretty standard.
