    Hard to turn my wheel

So the deal is...my boat was really hard to turn...I couldnt turn with one hand anymore...so I figured it was my steering cable. I was a little surprised because my boats an 07..but whatever. so I disconnected it to take it off...and now that it is disconnected from my rudder...it isnt hard to turn anymore. and my rudder rotates as I would expect it to.
My question is...when your steering cable 'goes'...does it only get sticky when there is force (rudder) applying to it? cause my steering wheel moves freely with it diconnected.

Where did you disconnect it and then discovered it's now easy to turn - at the rudder or the steering rack? Your rudder box has a grease fitting on it that needs a shot or 2 a couple times a year, just an FYI.

As far as cable life goes, what kind of water do you boat it is you boat stored on a lift (with water left in bilge) or trailered and a dry bilge? These effect cable life.

I disconnected it at the rudder...the rudder doesnt seem sticky or anything when I moved it by hand...but I did buy some grease for my grease gun, so Im going to hit the zert fitting today. But Im curious though...when a steering cable goes...is it still hard to turn with it disconnected at the rudder?

When I did mine, I think after we had it disconnected I tried turning the wheel and it felt loose. It made me nervous but we went ahead and changed it anyway. It worked out okay in the end.

If you feel nervous, just put it back on and try it again. Then you know for sure that its the cable.

My steering cable was very difficult to turn before and AFTER I disconnected it at the rudder, the rudder itself moved very easily sided to side.

My cable was stuck one year, and after forcing it back and forth it freed up a little. I ended up having to replace it about six months later, and I all I could say was that I should have done it the first time instead of fighting it for six months. Also on my boat the cable was ran under the gas tank. Lee recommended that I run it over the top over that top of the tank, and I have not had any more issue yet.

sounds like it is binding in the tube

              try grease

you never want the wheel all the way to one side

the best is turn the wheel every other week to stop a sticking cable

Funny, I have a 2007 22V and had the boat out this weekend. When I put it in storage in September the steering wheel was normal. This weekend I could hardly turn it. We tried to hit the zert fitting with a grease gun but it did not seem it would take any. I did not have a lot of time and had to put the boat back in storage before I returned home (5 hr drive). I need to take care of this before next summer and I am interested about your results.

I have a 07 RZ2. My cable is starting to get "sticky" so im putting a new one on this winter. Its one of those parts that will need replaceing once in a while when you think its getting a little hard to turn. Just get a new one and it will be good as new.

I think what happends is when your boat sits for a long time,(in storage)some water that might be in the steering cable begins to rust and things stop moveing properly. On my last boat I had the same problem. When I replaced the cable some nasty rust colored water came out. After I put the new one on it was good as new. When you put a new one on try to keep it off of the bottom of your bilage as much as possible to keep it out of the water.

There are newer cables available that resist corrosion better and are also made to handle extreme installation angles better.

                      Teleflex:
                      Standard cable is SSC134xx

                      Upgrade cable is SSC154xx

                      XX=cable length.

I would double check with Tige' on the length you need. In my case they recommended installing one that was 1 foot longer than the one originally installed. Also make sure if you do change the cable to install it OVER and not UNDER the gas tank.
