340hp mp engine failure, anyone else have this problem

I have a 2006 22ve with the 340 hp 5.7L marine power motor, and i lost a cylinder, water temp and oil pressure were fine on the gauges when it happened, melted the sides of the piston in the number 8 cylinder, was wondering if anyone else had any engine failure problems with this motor?

it only has 244 hours. I talked to my dealer, the warranty expired in may, they tried talking to marine power to see if they would still cover it, first they said they would work with me. Then after they saw pictures of the inside of the cylinder, they said it must have been a water cooling problem and that they wouldn't cover it even if it was still under warranty. The thing that bothers me is that earlier the same week the dealer said their machinist said it looked like a lean fuel condition caused it, which should be covered by warranty.

Your now the third or 4th 2006 motor to fail on here, this year!

It's funny how all of us are popping up at the same time. At first I chalked it up to bad luck on my part. But now that there's a few of us, I'm starting to wonder. The sad part is we're a very small sample of the population on this board. I wish we could find out how many others are in the same boat for the 06's. I'm starting to wonder if there was a manufacturing defect that year that's just now showing up.

Maybe all of our motor's were just put together on a monday????

It melted the sides of the piston? That's some serious heat! Did they find any blockages in the water jackets?

Ok, so if it is a water cooling problem you might be able to get the insurance to cover it if you sucked something up through the fresh water intake. I think surfdad got his replaced under insurance when he "ingested" something.

O wow, I just saw that about the melting the sides of the piston. Yeah, not good. Prob. not a manuf. defect on that one.

            Timmy is right on!

You will probably need to reduce the size if uploading direct from your PC, MS Paint works, or upload them to a hosting site like photoucket.com and then copy/past the URL over here and post them full size.

I know of 3 fried motors in 2005-07 amongst the less than 10 Tige owners I know in my town. When I sold my old boat, I would have taken one of the many 07 RZ2's out there with the MP motor that were for smokin' deals, but I am staying away from MP. My old boat has 350 hours and is still going strong...but there are way too many of these posts for my liking. I won't post that on the General discussion area, but i couldn't let another of these threads come up without a comment.

The MP in 06 from the GM vortex aren't they? Or are they the same? I have a 340hp in my 06 22v, 300 hours.

                          The 06 5.7 is a Vortec.
Mine is probably an 06 motor because boat went to Reeds In Dec of 06.

Reeds at Lake Delavan has a very good service department

Keith and his crew are great. They do their best to have a happy customer.

They promised to deal with a few issues with my vinyl and kept that commitment and fixed the issues.

When they sold my old boat he asked if the new owners could give me a call to answer some questions. They are like many of the Tige dealers that go that extra step even with a orange yellow and frost 20V.

I hope I haven't given anyone the wrong impression, I am not upset with my dealer, Keith and the crew at Reeds are awesome! and have been helping me out in any way they can. I am not happy however with Marine Power, especially after all the engine failure problems I have heard about with their motors.

Hay guys, we need to heed caution here. All we know is that engine provided to Tige carrying the Marine Power name have had a catastrophic failure BUT we do not know why! We have had 2nd hand info through some owners from their dealers, but no one from MP has posted up, no one from Tige, and no dealer technicians that have actually torn one down and determined the ROOT cause of the problem. I'm not saying it's not a MP mistake, just saying there are outside factors that could be the root cause.

So far, I dont recall anyone with a DD posting up with an engine failure, only V-drives. So far it seems to be 05's and 06's, maybe one 07. One 06 has had 2 engines and I'll bet these 2 were built 2 years apart. That make me really wonder.

We are all playing armchair mowkaniks here, only going on bits of inconclusive info and a couple of pics.
