    Additional Fuel Filters ????

I was reading the older thread about fuel flow gauges as replacements for the fuel gauge, and saw a lot of comments about fuel filters.

I seem to recall reading in the Merc manuals some pretty stern warnings AGAINST adding additional fuel filters in line with the stock Merc water separating filter. The warnings implied that it would disrupt proper fuel flow, fuel pressure, and performance.

What is the reason for adding an additional fuel filter.
What's the risk of not having it?

Tige MD - appreciate your comments.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

The Merc's have an in line filter now. Started around 2001-2002 I think.

        filter

The impeller inside the flow meter is very small and can become cloged. The line is metal after the water seporation filter so you need to add a filter befor the impeller and the water filter. I have had no problems and mine has been in one year.

as lee said, merc added a in-line filter back in 01'. the reason was, they added a boost pump to eliminate vaporlock. that pump needed a filter. if you add a flow meter put it between the in-line filter and boot pump. if you boat does not have the boost pump you will need to add a filter. this should not cause any problems with the fuel system. unless the new filter clogs up. this will be one more thing to check at service time.

            Thanks for all the info.

I don't believe I have the boost pump, and am fine with the performance of my fuel level gauge, don't intend to add a fuel flow gauge.

So I think I'm going to leave well enough alone!

Thanks again for all the info.

I'm really getting a lot of valuable info on this board.
            Sure beats working!
