    Transmission Question????

At Powell everything was PERFECT<< until last day while trying to pull up a skiier WOT The tranny (Slipped???) I quickly stopped the boat and checked the fluid and I was at the bottom of the dipstick I added a quart of dexron ATF and the problem went away. Is my tranny ok??? Is this normal behavior for low fluid? It is the velvet drive trans in my 02 21V. PLEASE advise???!!!!

It's a hydraulic transmission that operates much the same way an automotive automatic would. Low fluid causes low apply pressure and this will allow the clutch pack to slip. I'm sure it's ok seeing that you stopped and topped it off right then. Just as a good measure, I would change it this Fall.

      dexron III or Mobil 424????

I am not sure what was in the trans, but does anyone know what the Mobil 424 is?? And merc says "do not mix"!! Marina only carried the dexron, so i guess I will just drain and fill with????? Any Suggestions?
      Thanks

Quick glance, the Mobile 424 looks more like a gear oil for the V-drive then a hydrolic fluid for a transmission. It has a GL-4 rating which is pretty heavy weight.

Who make the trans? Is it a Merc trans (do they even make one ) or is it made by someone like Borg-Warner? I'm guessing your boat has a V-drive unit that is a separate component from the trans. Hopefully someone with an older V-drive with a Merc can shed some light on the powertrain.

I'll bet your trans is the same one in our boat: Velvet Drive, 1:1, Model 71C, LH rotation, Dexron III, 1 1/2 qt
