Fuel Flow Gauge

For those of you that have not added a Fuel Flow gage to your boat yet but are thinking of it, I thought I would pass this on.

That a lot less then I paid just 8 months ago.
The one that I have works great. On my first tank it said I used 28.2 gal and I only used 27.5 . I never bothered to re calibrate it, and now I know how much gas I really have.

that's where I picked mine up. I took a day to put it in and haven't had any problems with it (just remember to set it to gallons, per the instructions). I posted pics of my install in the other fuel gauge thread in this forum.

Unfortunately, this guage will not work with fuel injected engines. More fuel flows through the lines than is actually used and this requires two transducers where the volume of the return is subtracted from the supply. These, unfortunately, become expensive when you can find them.

For carburated engines this is a good deal.

I am going to need something. Even when my tank is half full (I know because it took 18 gallons to fill) the guage still reads full. I don't yet know if the guage is not working, or based on other comments, Tige guages are simply eye candy and do not work properly because of the tank design.

Actually that sounds like a good idea. A built in reserve. The Navman states you use slightly more fuel than actual. Thats got to be better than the Tige gas gauge that shows a full tank when you are almost empty

Tige's dont use a fuel return. Only one line in and no return line. Most cars use a fuel return system to regulate pressure but most marine engine even fuel injected dont. I have this same guage and it works great.

I'm not sure if all Tiges lack the return line. I was told that my engine (Merc 350 MPI) does not have a return line.

I used my Navman all last year and it was always accurate + or - 1 gallon except the one time I forgot to reset it after refueling!

I have the Marine Power 5.7 335hp MPI engine
It has only one line going to the fuel filter / Water separator, After that there are two lines.
You need to install the transducer between the stock filter and gas tank. ( make sure to add a small filter before the transducer )

Interesting. I was told by the dealer that I needed a system that also accounted for the return line because of the fuel injection. Thanks for correcting my misinformation.

This is the same unit I have. I was told that some units have a retrun line and some don't depending on which fuel injecter was used.

first off, there is a fuel return. it just does not return to the fuel tank, it returns to the fuel pump/filter. the coast gaurd does not like pressurized fuel lines in bilges. they allow it, but it's very dangerous if you spring a leak. there is only one ski boat manufacture that uses this system that i know of and knowing what i do about the volatility of gasoline i wouldn't own that boat. that said, now back to our topic of return fuel. the fuel pump supplies more fuel than the engine needs, thats is why we have a regulator, the fuel that is not used is sent back to the filter/pump to make a second trip through. while it is circulating it is serving a purpose, cooling the fuel rails and lubricating the pump/pumps. so, if you install a single trandeucer "before" the fuel pump/filter it will only read the amount of fuel being pulled from the tank. it has no idea the fuel passing through is circulating at the engine. it doesn't care, all it wants to do is measure what passes through it.

Fuel Guage

Ok, so what do we do?? Does Tige have a fix that they can recommend? As someone said we have these top of the line boats and most of us would pay some real dollars if this worry would go away. I also think Tige should incorporate it in there new boats. When I visited the factory I told this to a few people there and they agreed but we still seem to be talking about it.

Help me understand?

As far as I am understanding we can use the nav man it just won't give us current consumption very accurately. It will tell us how much gas is in or out of the tank. Is this right?
