    Help Please! Overheating issue..

So I took my boat (2000 2100V) out last weekend, and everything ran fine and no problems. I've not hit anything in the water or anything that I know of. Took the boat out yesterday, and noticed a smell at low speed as I was pulling away from the ramp. Smelled like a hot engine, if you know what I mean. Didn't smell gas, or oil, and saw no smoke. The temp. gauge showed real hot, 3/4 of the way along the guage, I believe 250? So I got it back to the dock, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Turned the key to see the temp, showed 1/2 way (175 deg), tried to turn it over, but it made a real loud clunking noise, which made me not want to even try turning it over again. Any ideas? I looked at the prop, didn't notice anything seriously wrong, but if you have any inklings, don't rule it out. From what my prelim research has shown, its either an impeller gone bad, or the water pump maybe. I haven't changed either, and don't know how long it has been since either has been changed. The engine is a Mercruiser 350Mag MPI. Oil dipstick had clean oil on it. Please help fellas, not many weeks left in the season. Anybody around here in OKC or Norman want to help with the install, if it's not too tough? Usual install help necessities will be present, food, drinks, you know

i would start by changing the impeller. do a search on impeller change, you will find all the info you need.

Sounds like the over heating is due to a bad impeller. If you pull it out and find the impeller is toast, inspect the housing real close for scaring and blueing. A bad housing will lead to repeated impeller failure if not replaced. I hope the engine noise you heard was just spark knock from the excessive temp, 250 is pretty warm for and engine with no water in it.

You folks are speaking of the impeller that propels the boat, not the impeller in the water pump, correct? I guess I need to get an impeller pull huh...

The Propeller pushes the boat, the impeller is the raw water pickup that supplies the engine's circulation pump with water.

definitely change the "raw" water pump impeller

no, they are speaking about the small water pump before the main water pump on the engine, the pump that sucks lake water up to feed the main water pump

X2, inspect the housing thoroughly, I replaced my impeller after two outings because I didn't check the inside, there was a small groove in the housing that wore the new impeller down fast, had to replace the entire housing

Thats a good reference but for him to change the impeller he will have to pull off the whole water pump assembly.

I'm sure he has a Merc motor which you do have to remove the entire housing from the engine, doesn't make it any easier being a V-drive either

Yeah I have the Merc motor. Anybody know a good place to pick up an impeller here in Oklahoma City? Or should I order one online? Not quite sure of the part #

How much life do you guys get out of a $12 Impeller? That scares the hell out of me a merc. will run you 40ish what kind of quality can you be getting for $12.Is there a mane brand on it? Not sure I want to risk my $5K motor on a $12 impeller. But if it works for you great!

You can hurt your motor with a broken $40 dollar impeller just as easily as a broken $12 dollar one.

Neither one is built like a brick chit-house!

NO CHIT! I understand that. The question was how much life are guys getting of them. 1 yr 2yr or more how many hrs? So you are telling me you have compared the 2 and there is no difference in quality?
