Noise help!!!!

"OK guys" I need your sharpest memories and experiences on this one. I have developed a few noises in the past couple of weeks and they have me quite baffled. Over the winter I had the Ve at the dealer to try and address the low rpm quiver and vibration in the engine, the flexplate was replaced thus meaning the trans & V drive were removed. The quiver still exisit and is the same as it always was. However I have now developed a very strange metalic clatter in the trans area when in gear, just at engagement & idle speed, bump it up a 100 rpms or so and it is gone, Sounds like a bunch of rocks rolling around in the trans. It then begins to get a whistle or higher pitch hooting sound from somewhere in the engine area at about 900 RPM's & up, it tends to change in tone or octive about three times up to about 1200 rpm's and then goes away. Once at speed there is no noise, the engine perfoms fine just like it always has. The whistle noise is much like a wine glass filled with water and running your finger around the top to make a tune. The prop has been swapped and made no change. I have listened around the engine area with scopes & what not, the grogling sound is def in the trans area & the hooting chime sound I have no idea, where ever I go to listen, it always seems like it's coming from over there, I go over there and it then sounds like it is over here, on & on and on. 07 22Ve 340 MP, any ideas fellas?

Hate to say, but it sounds like your dealer created an actual problem trying to fix your "quiver" which is probably just the normal harmonics of a V8. It's there in most V8, especially the 5.7 block, but is not noticed in cars and trucks due to the rubber mounts dampening it.

For the higher pitched "hooting" sound, try cleaning your spark arrestor. Sounds like you could be getting a whistling through those fins as the air picks up speed with the RPM's. Also check any vacuum hoses that could be off or cracked. Had that happen on an old Bronco once.

I have used a long screw driver to place strategically in certain area's and have located the groggling noise to be in the trans area. I am about ready to purchase a set of wireless chasis ears to finish off this diagnosis.

I seem to agree with you Mike. I called them, and ran it by them and he told me the flex plate has some springs built into it and if they get loose or out of place it can make a very similar sound. Here is the catch, to see it i've got to pull the trans out. I mentioned this same vibration and quiver about 1.5 years ago on the forum and no one at that time had the same issue, I dont think this could be considered normal when it is at it's worst the tower is shaking and wiggling and the tata's like bowls of jelly. I kind of wish I never had them pursue it. I think the harmonic balancer needs to be replaced, hence "balancer" why it wasn't, ???????????????????????????????

I've had my ear right there on it and it's not coming from there, seems to be down lower, not around the intake area. The wireless chasis ears will help with this.

I know I have heard this chiming noise in other boats before, most recently a MasterCraft, it wasn't mine so I didn't pursue the noise, it actually was on a test drive in that boat with a purchasing customer.

I had this noise on my 20v, It started about 1000 rpm and stoped at 1500 rpm. The noise started after installing a new prop, I bent the old one hitting a sand bar. Figured the noise was the prop and waited for my old one to be repaired. Put the old one back on and noise still there. Called ACME and they knew all about it. He said square off the back of the blades and sharpen the leading edge. They called it "prop sing". This reduced the noise by 50%. Then I set the Prop shaft alignment, took several hours but got it perfect. You could spin the prop with one finger. Noise gone. I figure the alignment changed hitting the sand bar and made it more sensitive to "prop sing".

When your Tige dealer pulled the tranny they changed the alignment and could have caused the noise. Well something to check anyway.

If it was the harmonic balancer it would get REAL bad the higher the rpms.

Sounds like high pitch whistle and clatter is coming coming from the drivetrain.
Agree with Chp on this one. Dealer may not have aligned it properly which can/will cause geartrain noise in a short amount of time.
