    smoking belt

went out last weekend & all was good all day. shut the boat off for rider change, start back up & the belt is squeling and smoking like crazy! I shut down the motor to inspect & all looks good. Start back up & runs great the rest of the day.
Could the impeller have gotten stuck? any help?

ARe the belts tight? When was the last time you changed the belts in the engine compartment?

belt is tight. replaced last year. I did not replace the impeller this year, but we used the boat quite a bit all winter.

You can go two years on an impeller if you want... Interesting!!!

Sounds like the engine rolled backwards when shut down, this can cause the impeller to "flip". Then it wont spin when the engine is started back up.

Thats what it seems like. my 14 year old daughter was pulling kids on the tube & driving harder than normal. It may have back fired on shutdow.

Mine does this on occasion. I just turn the boat off and rotate the pully for the pump by hand. This generally will flip the impeller back.

That must be what happened, thank you for the input.
I've owned two inboard boats over the years & this was a first.
It definently was not a loose belt, this thing was burnin rubber!

That's what I'm thinking, too. Good call chpthril!

I'd watch the temp gauge closely in case the impellar is cooked. I don't know if there is an alarm on engine temp. There was on my prior boat.

I seriously doubt the impeller was cooked. I get the feeling the impeller gets cooked if it is being run dry in there. In the scenario described by fleet, the impeller would not have been moving at all, as the belt wouldn't have been rotating. So, there shouldn't have been an friction or heat.
