    Packing on drive shaft.

How do I know when packing needs to be replaced? Is it when there is no more adjustment and leaks alot.

if that is your situation, then yes, it is time to repack the gland.
be sure to get teflon packing rope. it lasts alot longer, with less water leaking in.

I'm almost out of adjustment on the packing nut and I'm going to replace packing. You mentioned teflon, do you think this would be a better choice than the goretex? Do you know the size packing a 1998 2100wt uses?

      Thanks, mainiak1

only gortex i've ever seen is in my hunting/fishing socks

we've been real happy with the teflon rope, couldn't tell you about gortex.

if the shaft seal is white nylon it will take 1/4", if it is brass it will take 3/16".

I have a slow leak around the drive shaft. How do I tighten the packing nut and how can you tell if it needs to be replaced?
