    prop removal

Hey guys, I was hoping someone could tell me what tools I need to take the prop off of an inboard. I've done it on an IO but never an inboard. Thanks

You need a prop puller. There are a few different types.
Here is a link to one at Overton's for $100.00.

What's wrong with your current prop?

Side note to the prop puller.....
I was under my boat the other-day just checking it out. With the boat in neutral should you be able to spin the prop???? I can't. It runs fine when I have in the water.

        Thanks

Your prop won't spin that easily when it's not in the water.

That indicates a possible alignment issue. I dealt with that on my boat. Once I got everything aligned correctly I can turn my prop with two hands almost effortlessly. If it is real stiff to turn your prop shaft is in a bind.

Check your strut bearing. If it is has any of the rubber bearing smashed at all on the top, bottom, one side or the other in the front of the bearing or back of the bearing you have an alignment issue that needs to be addressed.

Thanks, I guess I'll need to acquire a prop remover. I have to trailer a long ways and was considering taking off the stainless prop as a security measure.

They don't come off very easily so security might not be as much of an issue, now amps/radio/life jackets...other odds and ends I would be more worried about. A lot of easy to grab equipment goes missing here in Florida. I never leave boards in the tige or fishing equipment in the flats boat.

Let the hoodlums steal your SS and take the insurance money and get an Acme

Just changed our original OJ 14-18 out for an Acme #537 13.5-16. Can't wait to try it out - Veteran's Day.
This was the first time I changed out the prop on our boat, fairly easy.
Our boat has low hours and I can easily turn the prop with one finger.
There is some resistance, but just enough that everything feels tight with no slop.

To change the prop you'll also need a short piece of 2x4 to keep it from turning while removing/installing the nut. Loosen the nut a few turns, then use the puller to break the prop loose from the tapered shaft. It made a very loud thunk when it broke loose. A ratcheting box wrench (1 1/8") works a lot better that the wimpy stamped wrench in the kits. A socket wrench won't work - the rudder's in the way. If you have a kit, throw in some extra cotter pins. Check the extra shaft key in a kit. The spare key in the kit I have was too long. Had to shorten the key and round off the ends/edges a bit to get it to fit. Would not have been able to do that at the lake.

I worry a little about the prop disappearing while traveling. Our next door neighbor had the whole rear bumper stolen off his pickup in the driveway at night and both our bedrooms are in the front of the house.

Well, keep in mind that you'd need the special tool to remove the prop. I seriously doubt that most thieves have that capability. Plus, these are highly specialized props and there's probably not a huge market for them.

I know, that's why I said "a little". It's easier to do what happened to our friend's brother. They stopped at a hotel with a Suburban/boat in the parking lot. The whole rig was gone in the morning.
