    Fiberglass repair for seats?

    RE-Installing Seats #2 on 2002 23V

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recently repaced my carpet on my boat and found that the hardware used for my swivel seats were six #12 wood or maybe sheet metal screws. Seems pretty Cheesy. The issue I am having is what to do now. I drilled out the holes in the fiberglass floor, thinking I would glass in an anchor to accepte a 1/4"x 20 machine screw. There are six holes around the base of the seat. The problem is on the 3 inside holes(nearest the center of the boat) as they have about 1/2 to 3/4" of fiberglass and then nothing, just empty space into the bilge, with no real bottom access than I can figure out. I put some cloth fiber material and resin into the hole but when I mounted the anchor into the glass and resin, the anchor pushed the resine and fiber down into the hole, which just dripped into bilge. I am looking for ideas on how to fix this. I was also wondering what is the wood material used as stringer possibly, on the outboard side of the boat, which is also located under the outboard side of the seat below the floor, as when I drilled into it-kind of looked like some type of fiber board material. I sure hope not. Gives my thoughts of my parents Bayliner... Cheap!

Any ideas on a good fix for the seats at this point as I have six 3/4" diameter holes which I drilled out. Which started out as the six holes for the #12 screws which were ment to be large enough to do a glass repair and accespt the machine screw anchors The holes ones on the outboard side the fiberglass repair worked as they had the wood backing or what ever that material is under the floor, However the three holes on the inside of the seats are not repaired. They drop down into the bilge area with no access to the bilge area from the bottom that I can figure out. Sorry for the rambling as I don't have any pics of my botched repair attempt at this time.

First idea - can you rotate the seat base and screw into fresh floor.

Next - if you cant rotate base, then fill holes, let set, drill pilot holes for #12's in patched hole, reinstall seat base. With the right filler material, the patch will bond with the fiberglass floor and might be just as strong before.

Your boat probably has some wood in it, don't worry, wood has been used in boats for thousands of years. It's not a bad thing or a sign of cutting corners. I think (speculate) that most boat builders have moved away from wood because man made materials are easier to built with and, here's that bad word, cheaper, but only in manufacturing cost, not quality)

Good luck, i'm sure there will be lots of good ideas to help you.

You could use JBweld over liquid nails to fill the holes in. The liquid nails would only be used to make the foot for the JB to set in. The slow cure stuff has a holding strength of 5400 pounds or something. Once that sets, you could tap it.

I replaced the floor in a old I/O I once owned and used a stainless toggle bolt that went thru a 1/2" DIA hole and then rotated and was held in place with nylon straps (similar to a zip tie). You then had a 1/4-20 machine screw thread. Had decent surface area. I got them at local West Marine. I believe the brand name was "toggle" or something similar. I would clock the base 30 degrees and use those. If there is any wood under there seal the whole deal very well to resist rot. You also can get them at McMaster Carr for little cheaper.
