Trying to get my "new" boat up to date... 2000 tige 21v

    Good afternoon,

I purchased a 2000 21v Tige Monday. Mercruiser 350 black scorpion 330hp with 400 hours. I ran the boat initially with no issues. Second time out trans fluid light comes on... check trans, milky oil. Flushed it out. All other fluids are good.

Third time out no issues with trans. Boat overheats, i never let it get above 190. I shut it down, checked water intake, all good, let it cool, went for another spin. Hot again, killed it. I went to ease in and the boat started, sputtered, died. Wouldn't fire after that. Took it home and let it cool. I removed the fuel cap to see if the gas tank vent was blocked, didn't notice any air being sucked down but it was noisy around me. Backed it into my local lake, fired up and ran fine.

Also noticed my speedo isn't working... I don't use it, however, i did notice it was working my first trip out.

Before i run it again i want to do all of the maintenance top to bottom, and most importantly, the cooling system.

    1. oil change
    2. thermostat
    3. water pump
    4. impellar
    5. vent hose

I need help with two things... part numbers, and what other maintenance do you suggest?

    Thank you,
    Sam

Sound like your impeller was the problem with the overheating, so it's good your replacing that.

The part numbers can be looked up by entering your serial # on this site.

You should replace the fuel filter/separator. Check the serpentine belt.
You could replace some of the ignition parts. Distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires.

I don't know if the year 2000 was using a pitot tube or a paddle wheel to drive the speedometer?

You got me there Mike... any idea how to find out?

I apologize for the novice questions... this is my first inboard. I've got to tell you i've been thrilled so far with the access this boat gives you for maintenance. When you pull the rear seat there is nothing but room to work. Not sure i'll be so lucky with the impeller side.

Okay, so i'm adding all of the ignition parts and Fuel filter/separator as well.

I plan on doing what i should have done in the first place... getting all of the maintenance up to date so i know what i've got.

      Thank you sir.

You likely have the tube for the speedometer. Look under the swim platform to the right of the Taps plate, there should be a black plastic lever about 3 inches long. It is likely flipped up, this happens sometimes when putting it on the trailer. Gently flip it down so it is just below the bottom edge of the boat.

I would also suggest moving the bilge pump to the back of the boat. They put them in front of the V-Drive on these, which allows them to get a fair amount of water in the bilge. Move it closer to the back wall will help a lot.

Looks like you are well on your way. Don't forget to give your trailer a good look over too. Welcome aboard!

I would highly suggest this as well! I too am a new owner of 1999 21i, and have had a few issues - to include trailer problems (just put in an order to etrailer for new drums and brakes).

First season on the lake and I have already had to deal with:
            1) Tire blow out - caused damage to wheel well bunks
            2) Shredded impeller/housing
            3) Oil gauge was inoperable
            4) Trailer hub smoking - wheel bearing, upon repacking other bearing side the brake shoe fell apart

OP - I would highly suggest taking a good look at the trailer brakes, and repack the bearings!

I was blessed with a Dorsey trailer with hydraulic brakes. Man this thing is awesome! Pulls better than my 17ft bayliner.

Parts are ordered, $400. Got a mechanic buddy to help, hoping to be on the water at 100% next week. Will advise.

Something to consider... as I am not sure where you are located. However, I am looking to do my first winterization soon, and I have seen that lots of people replace the fuel/water filter, before the winter, to ensure all water is removed from the fluids.

                Just throwing that out there.

Samuelp63, Did you swap out your Spark plug wires? if so which ones did you go with? I need to do the same.

                  thanks,
