    Synthetic oils

Any one use SYN oils? And if so, at what point on the hobbs?

My car came from the factory with Syn and I changed over my motorcycle at 15K to Syn.

I'm picking up my Tige next week, so I have no idea what, if anything the owners manual has to say on this subject.

I considered this also. I called Marine Power and talked to them for a while about this. They said there is nothing against it however they have not done any testing with snythetic oils. They did say if you go with the SAE 30 or 40 that they recommend the engine would last forever.
I'm on a boat man. I got my flippy floppies....

I am going to use a synthetic in my boat when I chang oil the first time. It will be Schaeffer 20-50 synthetic racing oil. The multi weight oil has a lower pour point than a straight weight oil meaning it isn't as thick when it is cold, but its viscosity holds up like a higher weight oil. The racing oil does not foam like cheaper oils can.

I use synthetics in my truck, but never in the boat. Thanks for the info from MP rushin.

I have acctually seen HP gains from Royal Purple Oil in cars. I am not sure about boats though.

I have heard that synthetic oil does a better job of keeping contaminants(dirt particles, etc.) in suspension so your filter does a better job of filtering the contaminants out of the oil. It also holds its viscosity longer. I do not know if this is a big advantage for marine engines since they normally are not operated in dusty environments. Most boat owners change their oil annually and do not put enough hours on their boats to make a non-synthetic oil start to break down. Their really is not a down side to synthetics except that they cost a little more.

I run Mobil One 15w-30 fully synthetic. I change it anually and it always looks like new when I change it. 65 or so hours p/year.

I'd be interested in getting some from Tige to weigh in on this.

They'll just say check with MP or who ever the engine manufacture is.

For those of us with the Merc engine Merc does not recommend the use of syn oil. I'm not sure why but the owners manual specifically mentions not to use syn oil in the Merc engine.
