    Teak platform idea

I love the look of my teak platform. We do not like however the slippery surface it has. I have an idea to create some sort of design that could be templated. Then you could use a router and just put a 1/8" or so groove in the top using the template. Then stain/seal etc just as you would normally. Does this seem like a doable idea? Has anyone done similar?

New platforms seem to have grooves all the way through which sorta acts like a shower pan. I like that idea also but that would take a little more work I believe.

Just thinking out loud but even with the grooves wouldn't the top still be slippery?

I know that you mention you like the teak look, I have seen many of the teak that have been what looks to be rhino lined.

It seems that there was a thread some time ago that had a process for finishing teak that would not leave it slippery. I will search to see what I can find.

It might be that the previous owner put too much clear coat on it. I think I might just redo it with just teak oil. Looks like 600 grit is recommended with some cleaner and just teak oil properly dried before hitting the water.

We use teak oil and does fine as long as not heavily applied. I put too much on this yr and looked great but was slippery for 3-4 weeks till I let the sun bake it - then normal. the groove approach sounds good but not sure that will solve for overall slippery condition.

When doing teak never ever ever go higher then say 200 grit sandpaper. There is a writeup on wakeworld about it. Basically you are making the deck more slippery. I made this mistake on my last boat. On my 24v the deck has never been slippery and I have re-done it every year. I do a little sanding at 200 grit but not a lot. Hope this works for you. Totally has for me.

X2 what Duffymahoney said. Loved my teak platform. Every 3-4 weeks I would wipe a thin coat of teak oil on mine. Since I didn't sand too smooth, the thin coating would keep it looking like brand new and never slick.
