Ok here we go. I tried to find a good sticky but doesn't seem to be one that explains step by step.
It's supposed to be a cold winter in Vancouver this year so although I have never had winterizing issues before this is only my second winterize with an inboard (previous boat was I/O) so I thought I would put my procedure down and ask for comments.
First question: Can anyone confirm how many blue drain cocks there are on an 02 Mag 350 MPI? I can find 4, that's it. (Worked fine last winter).
Ok here's what I do. Please note that this is just WHAT I DO. It's NOT necessarily perfect which is why I'm posting this for comments.
2002 Merc Mag 350 MPI, raw water cooled
21i
First I mix up the Merc cocktail: 87 octane, stabilizer and 2 cycle outboard oil. I don't mix a full batch, just about 5 litres (1USG = 3.8L) in a small gerry can using reduced proportions accordingly.
With the boat's fuel tank full I add enough stabilizer to do 150litres.
Boat's on a trailer so I hook up the FAL (I use a plunger with a hose bib), turn on water and start the engine. Run for 10m to pull stabilized fuel through fuel system.
Shut down. I then remove the fuel line from the fuel inlet side and place one end of a short fuel hose on. The other end of the fuel hose goes into my gerry can with the cocktail.
Restart and run for 10-15m at approx 1000-1400rpm.
Shut down.
Run easy drain oil line through hole in hull to drain container and drain oil. While oil is draining I pull the quick drain lines from the block (1 port / 1 star) and I remove the 4 blue drain cocks. Let drain completely.
Remove T-stat housing and pour RV/plumbing antifreeze into block via T-stat opening. I watch for pink to appear at the quick drain cocks then close when good and pink. Continue pouring until pink appears at blue drain cocks then close. Once all are closed I continue filling until the antifreeze has filled to the T-stat housing.
Re install T-stat housing. (New gasket in spring)
Install new water seperator filter (place a tray under the old one when removing)
Reseal the oil quick drain line and pull back up through hull to where it normally sits. Install new oil filter, and add 4L of 25-40W oil. (In the spring I start, run, and then top up oil with the last litre as the new filter fills)
Remove battery.
Next spring I will also replace tranny fluid and every 2nd year impeller too,
That's pretty much it guys. Any comments on this are MUCH appreciated.
Chris
