    Boat jack

I want to repair a scratch that's located on the exterior bottom edge, right where the side bunk is located. I can't access it with the bunk in the way, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to jack up the boat ~6-8" to gain access? I though I've read somewhere someone had done this to replace the bottom bunks...?

My other option would be to take it to the boat ramp and launch it enough to gain access, repair the scratch and then reposition it on the trailer. Thoughts?

I have seen people lower the tongue of the trailer very low, then they put jacks under the back of the boat then lifted the tongue of the trailer and the back half was up off the bunks. Doesn’t seem that safe though

I've jacked the front of my boat up with a floor jack to install new trailer parts. It was a little sketchy as the bow has a lot more curvature. But I would think jacking up the rear shouldn't be than big of an issue. I would make sure the front of the trailer is supported with more than just the wheel jack (ie hitch it up to a truck or put a jack stand under it).

I would use a floor jack and a few jack stands (with carpeted wood between boat and jacks to support the boat, you should be fine.

The lowering the hitch method does seem sketchy....better hope the stand doesn't give out! I was thinking securing to the truck, on a flat area, and only lift near the area I intend to work. Carpet inbetween a few 2x4's and the jack to distribute the weight.

        Thanks for the responses.

Ive done it, I used a 4x4 to spread out the weight across the hull. That way you dont have just the pressure point of the jack on the fiberglass. I only jacked it up enough to get the bunks out and replace.

Your second option sounds good to me - get in the water on a hot day with a beer and go to work - may as well enjoy it! :-)
