with most of the boats getting used for either wake boarding or surfing and the *** end squating down low the engines having to do some real work like driving uphill how ofen do you guys and gals service you engines and what is the life span before you notice a drop in performance or the need for a rebuild

@ your 1st question, 50 hrs or once a season, which even comes first.

To your second, dont know of anyone that has reached that point But I would apply the same rules for a boat engine as I would an automotive engine and use a cylinder leak-down test and compression test to determine that. beyond that, i wouldn't worry unless there were abnormal noises or excessive oil leaks.

One way I look at it is this. Most people would consider a boat with 1000 hours on its engine to be "well used". Yet if you presume an average of 35 MPH, a car with 1000 hours on its engine would only have 35K on its odometer... and most people don't consider 35K to be that many miles on a used car.

Granted, a boat engine works harder a greater percentage of the time, and its pattern of use isn't as regular (sitting in the driveway with intermittent use isn't all that good for an engine). Nevertheless, a high end marine engine - which PCM engines definitely are - will last a VERY long time with proper maintenance.

Properly maintain your engine, and I suspect you'll consider the boat around it to be "worn out" long before the engine.

I have a friend who has 3000 hrs on his PCM and it is still running strong. He used LUCAS or Mobile 1 motor oil only and still does. We did the cyl leak down test and compression test. Both were not even marginal and were well with in specs. He does proper winterization, and summerization every year. Cleans up any signs of rust or corrosion as soon as he sees it and has never had any problems.

My PCM has 245 hrs on it and I do the same. It runs very strong and has knock on wood given me know problems of any kind. Now the mountain I purchased at lake Mead is a different story. It gave me a little problem
