    Boat polishing

Just wondering what everybody else is useing for polishing gel coat. I have talked to a local dealer and they use finess-it by 3m. Wondering if anybody else has used this product, and what kind of buffing machine. Thanks in advance for the input.

Not polish but, I use Boat Bling wax and Hot Sauce on my boat.

I used the finess2 by 3m. It works well for light scratches and to really shine up the gel. Dont count on it to get out any fade or oxidation though. I used the dimpled foam pad and a variable speed buffer. Then follow it up with a coat of maguires marine flagship wax.

Porter cable makes a very nice dual action orbital polisher. The dual action aspect of it helps reduce the chance that you'll polish away too much material and helps avoid burning your paint on your car as well. It also greatly reduces the chances of leaving swirl marks on your finished surface, either the gelcoat or clear coat on your car.

I use Meguiars products and a Porter Cable 7424 (as Ewok mentioned).

I had some heavy oxidization in spots on my boat when I first got it, so I ended up using Yacht Brite Buff Magic with a Makita variable speed polisher, and it worked great. I followed it up with a good wax and it held up all year (with an extra waxing). Its probably a bit abrasive for repeated use.

Use the Finesse it rubbing compound with a wool pad for oxidation/big scratches and then follow up with the foam pad and the Perfect-It foam polishing pad glaze. I have been wetsanding and buffing my cars for close to 10 years with Finesse it products and used it on the boat for some small stuff.

I do a 3 step process for heavy oxidation first 3M super duty rubbing compound then 3m finess it 2 to get the minor scratces out then 3M paste wax to finish the job.

For minor oxidation I use 3M cleaner+wax with a wool pad the put an extra coat of 3M paste wax to finish off.

I use the FLITZ Polish twice a year and boat bright to maintain it between. seasons. It does a great job keeping it up.
