Changing oil, filters, and impeller on a EX-343 V-Drive...

While waiting for my newly purchased boat to arrive, I'm preparing to winterize it. I'm only going to run it for one weekend before winterizing and tucking it away.

Anyone have any tips to share? I expect the impeller to be a pain since it's toward the rear of the boat on a v-drive. I've read various threads on various sites that suggest removing the entire pump body (or not), etc. What has worked well for folks here?

How about oil - pump it out or use the built-in hose?

Should I find a lcoal PCM dealer and buy their PCM-labeled filters, or are their equal or superior aftermarket equivalents?

Just trying to do things right. I want this engine to last for years and years. Thanks!

I think you can download the engine manual from the PCM website in PDF format. My manual is just a print out bound together with a presentation style binder. I think many of your questions can be answered there. There was also a thread on this subject not too long ago. I'm not on my regular comp otherwise i could look it up for you.

Napa GOLD oil filter part#1515 is what you need.
the pcm motor requires removing the front housing of the waterpump to gain access to the impeller...not all that hard. good luck
Suck the oil out through the drain hose is my perfered method.

For this first time, I tried buying two different oil extraction pumps. Neither one fit the dipstick tube. That thing is tiny!

I ended up using the engine's own drain hose. I tried to push it through the boat's drain hole as recommended, but the yellow fitting on the hose is too large to fit through the hole. Best I could do was to get the very tip of the fitting through the hole, and let it drain across the TAPS plate. I could not have even threaded anything onto the end of the hose.

And it took FOREVER. There wasn't enough vertical distance to cause much flow due to gravity, so all I got was a trickle. I'm also pretty sure I didn't get all the oil out, but I manually filled the filter before installing it and with the new oil that went into the engine it should be most of it.

I like your idea of sucking it out via the drain hose, but I'll need to rube up some sort of fitting arrangement that mates with the hose end. Then I can probably do it while sitting in the port side storage compartment.

        Thanks!

WABoating - go get the pela 6000 oil extractor - it fits down the dipstick tube of the PCM engine. It is a fantastic tool and gets used on my vehicles as well. NO mess oil changes and it has no problem sucking warm 15W40 oil out. If memory serves, I got it at Overtons or someplace similar.

I already have a SERIOUS lube extractor. All I need to do is get a fitting that will screw together with the one on the end of the engine's existing hose. I'm going to try that first because 1) I already own the extractor, and 2) I expect the fitting(s) to be pretty cheap. Also, the oilpan hose is quite a bit larger than the dipstick tube so I'm hopeful that will speed things up.

If that fails, I'll be working through the dipstick - and I'll check out the Pela unit. Thanks!
