    Impeller removal on 16 Raptor

So....whomever put the heat exchanger next to the impeller is a punk engineer. Makes it hard to use an impeller removal tool since the exchanger gets in the way of the knobs on the tool

Just in case anyone else is trying to remove their impeller, just take the knob off on one side of the tool. Then, once you have it in, just crank the other knob. It will be little caddywhumpus but it comes out smoothly. Putting a new one back in was pretty simple. Just put the glycerin on it, twist it in a bit then press hard.

At 105 hours, the old impeller was a little stiff. Not brittle or anything but definitely time to go. I change mine out every every spring/early summer.

Impeller is Johnson 812B-1 in case you want to order from Amazon. Overall, pretty easy job once I figured out how to use the tool with the heat exchanger in the way

I'm pretty sure that Indmar must have hired a leftover Volvo engineer sometime in 15 or 16. That heat exchanger is almost an exact version of Volvo's heat exchanger as far as I can tell. It's a bitch, and I hate it.
They also started using a paper cartridge oil filter instead of a canister(which I do like) that is exactly Volvo's design. Just removed one from Indmar factory today with a Volvo filter in it. Volvo filter # 3875233. Going to start ordering our filters from Volvo instead of from Indmar as they are not including the white o ring for lid of housing. Have seen this cause oil leaks on Volvo's.
Regardless, I think the Volvo influence is sitting at a desk in Tennessee if I had to guess. Could be wrong though.

Which impeller puller are you using? Not looking forward to getting back and down there every year for this -- it was annoying enough for awhile laying in the locker and reaching back to pull the plugs when we were getting out early in the season

Just did mine this season on my 15 raptor 400 and didn't think it was too awfully bad. I removed the port side locker wall and the rear battery wall enclosure. Layed down in the locker and was able to reach around engine and remove impeller by just using needle nose pliers and wiggling it ALOT!! I agree though that a relocate would be nice!

I've heard some mechanics spin the engine over a bit when the casing is off and it will spin it out but haven't tried this method yet.

The '17s will be a bit harder, the key and switch for the tower and the ACR are in that battery wall, unless you're just talking about the access panel. Not thinking about all of this, I also installed a batter charger on the wall portion by the engine, with the plug in going through the locker side, as well as a power outlet for the inflatable pump (high amp pump).

How hard would it be to get at from the starboard, seems empty back there except for the ballast pump? Or is that the side that the exchanger gets in the way?

I just went over the top of the engine. No laying down involved. Really about a 5-10 min job once you know what your doing.

I lay on top of engine as well. Some of you have the round vertical heat exchangers and some of you have the big giant square POS. The big giant square makes impeller service touger. Those with the three on starboard side be happy!!

The Indmar cartridge style filter, P/N 501022S does come with an O-ring.

We ordered a dozen last fall at wint and none of them have o-rings. I assure you I did not open box, remove it then take picture just to have validation on a forum. Just trying to help people out. If this is something that has been changed and the issue is I ordered my filters last fall then fine. Will gladly exchange them. In the meantime I will keep buying them from Volvo since they have the o-rings. Especially since that's the filter I've pulled out on my last two 20hr changes from two different brand boats, which would lead me to believe they were installed in Millington not Maryville or Abilene
