Help! - stuck on step one replacing steering cable on 2005 22v

    Hello,

I'm following the steps on the sticky thread on this forum about replacing a steering cable, but i'm stuck on the first step in that thread.

I have removed the seat box and floor exposing access, but now in step one it says, "You will first need to loosen the nut that attaches the cable and the support tube using a 1 1/8" wrench".

I can barely get the wrench onto the nut in it's location underneath the engine. However, there is only enough room to get about an 1/8 of a turn on the nut!! As such I cannot get the wrench moved and into place for turning any further .

I've unhooked the water hose that was in the way but even so that's not enough access.

Who has done this before on the 2005 22v? Is there something else I need to remove to gain more access to get that nut loosened?

    Thanks in advance!

That is why it says you might need to cut off a wrench so you will have more room to be able to rotate the wrench.

I just did mine this year. Instead of loosing the 1 1/8" nut, just take that whole assembly out - then loosed that big nut. That was way easy. I don't remember the sizes, but use two ratchets and loosen the nut holding the whole assembly.

I believe there is another thread regarding this somewhere....

Thanks for the tips Lee and jslayde1.

I finally got some more time to work on it... I took the assembly off, but still couldn't get the nut off as it was locked on their too tight. I finally got my hands on a cut off tool and was able to get the whole thing out of the boat after cutting it between the vdrive and the gas tank as recommended. (I was a little nervous with all the sparks flying, inches away from the gas tank... I went slowly, kept my fire extinguisher nearby, and made it through ).

With the assembly out of the boat, after loading the nut up with WD40 (and a heart felt prayer ) I was able to get the nut off... woohoo .

One more question... am I supposed to lube up the arm that goes through the mounting assembly and attaches to the tiller with grease before installing?

You could do that and also put some anti seize on that nut to help remove it if you need to again.

Hi joswing, I've got an 06 22V, do you remember the part number and length of steering cable you bought? I think mine should be same as for your '05 22V. My boat is at the cottage so I can't verify the part number until I get there and was hoping to fix it on the next trip.

              Thanks
