While tightening the battery connection (350 MAG MPI) at the starter the solenoid housing sheared right off. Not sure if it was already damaged somehow but it failed with the usual snugging. Not finding anything on the forum about a DIY. Can the starter be replaced without engine removal?

Oh yeah, you can replace it without removing the engine. As with everything related to boat engines, it's not terribly easy to fit your hands under it to remove the bolts, but it's not that bad. I just replaced mine a couple months ago. This one will fit your boat and it's about half the cost of the Mercruiser branded one:

The one I'm using was in the $100 range as well. So far, so good.
