Spark Arrestor Removal

I have a 2007 24VE with a MarinePower 5.7L engine. I want to take the spark arrestor off to clean it. I removed the cover, left the wingnut off, loosened the hose style clamp around the bottom, but it won’t come off. Do I have to do something with the wingnut stud? I thought it just passed thru. What am I missing?

You have to pull really hard. They are tight.
