    Steering cable change

Could someone please help me out on figuring out how to take the steering cable off the steering rod? I have a 2004 20i and I have got the cable almost all the way out. But the end of the cable has a rod on it that is approximately 2 feet long. With the rod still on there is no way it can come up the hole in the floor. Does anyone know how this rod comes off the cable?

That is the article that I was referencing for this project. They don't say anything about how to disconnect the steering rod from the steering cable.

I have the same boat and have changed 1 cable on it , it sounds like you didnt crank the cable rack all the way in before you unhooked from the wheel in that case it will be to long to make the turn to come through the deck , I would check that first.

FIC, thanks a bunch that was exactly it! Sometimes the brain goes into neutral and is nice to have someone put back in gear. It is kind of interesting though, the tutorial that is floating around says to turn all the way to the right but to make mine shorter I had to go all the way to the left.

Where did you get your cable from? My Tige dealer only sells the 18 footer and I don't want to mess with switching the rack and steering around 180 degrees to make it fit. So I would like to buy the right sized cable if it is still made.

            Armstrong,
Don't use the 18' if a 16' came out of your boat! My dealer got me with the same thing. There are some goofy twists and bends in it now it is stiffer to the right than the left. It was fine before. Go with the 16'!!!!!!!!!!
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

              That's just lame.
Your cable is probably a Teleflex which can be ordered on-line from numerous places.
Call Teleflex (610 495-7011) if you have questions, they're very helpful.

The reason they switched to the 18 ft was to take some of the tighter turn out of the cable under the dash , it really didnt take long to rotate the steering column , also I got my cable from tige , but thats because Im a tige dealer.

I was wrong mine was a 17 footer and they want to sell me an 18 footer. I found a local Air Nautique dealer that has the original 17 footer so I am just going to buy from them instead.
