Does TAPS only work in neutral?

The TAPS system on my 2000 21i generally only works when the boat is in neutral. A couple of times though, at slow speed, I was able to make it work while in gear. Which is the normal way? It makes sense to me that you should be able to play with it to shape the wake while the boat is moving. Also, the handle on my throttle is excessively loose and I can't find the necessary tool (alan wrench I believe) to tighten it properly. I wonder if these two issues are related? Anybody have any insight?

Mine moves in gear and nuetral. No issues. Might be related, the handle being loose. Never had that issue.
    Let it be!!!

Sounds like a wire has pulled loose from the connector or broken inside the insulation and is making connection while the shifter is in natural and breaking connection when you put it in gear.

ALso if it is hydraulic, check the fluid levels. Mine was doing some wierd things when the levels were low.

I just read something in another post about a bad relay making Taps act funny.

Hey, whatever works for you Ruune! Not entirely sure how hitting your personal stash is going to help my TAPS problem.

So my understanding from this is that TAPS is supposed to work while in gear or in neutral, at any speed. Am I correct is assuming this?

Thanks everyone else for the advice. With the weather up here this time of year, this fix has just become a winter project.

yes, thats correct. You might also be getting some air in your hydraulic line. However, its probably a bad electrical connection.
