    Update

The alternator I got was too wide and will not fit w/o changing brackets. It looks to be the same form factor as DB's marine version. I'm probably going to try and buy one here in town in the $160 range tomorrow as I'm somewhat pressed for time. Thanks for the DB insight!

More good insight on 'having the ignition on' at the time. This is a possibility as I had someone at the key trying to start it when I switched batteries. I assume 'ignition on' is not necessarily trying to start, but in the spot just before turning to start.

When I turn key, just before starting spot, I get Perfect Pass/gauges on, as well as a high pitch whine and then clicking.

Question I have (know I may be getting ahead of myself, but): If ECM is damaged or shot can/will the clicking, which I've been told comes from fuel pump, still happen?

Still hoping it's only the alt....

Thanks for the inputs. May wind up saving me $$$.

      Amen it's running!

Installed a new alt from Texas Alt and that did it. DB would have been a little less, but now I'm on the water tomorrow afternoon as planned. Thanks again to everyone for the input.

yea it all started w/ 'just in gear'

Had handle a little forward and my mind just didn't go there.. Result: A week of trouble shooting, $225 in parts, and some unecessary worry. I got a good lesson and did learn more about the boat. I reversed polarity on a 150Yammie several years back, but that was a $2 fuse and 5 min repair.

Was just getting to the 'I'm sick of working on boat' phase when relief came. PTL!

DB all the way! I am just glad for the fuse on the Merc engines, although those bad boys are expensive. Glad that you are up and running. BTW, was your impeller blades reversed?
