    Engine Problem, Help???

I have a '00 2100V w/ a 350 MPI. Engine has run w/o the slightest hint of an issue over the past year. Made the dumb mistake of leaving throttle slightly in gear while on the water and engine wouldn't start. Have had battery corrosion issue pop up and went straight to the battery... well while I was trying to switch to back up battery I reverse polarity.... no good. Discover boat in gear too late. Blew 90 amp fuse by starter and replace it. Afterwards engine will again turn over. Next time on the water try starting and engine is right off hard to start. After 5-10 seconds, engine fires but runs very rough. At the same time notice loud high pitch and discover belt is not moving... have never had this issue. Engine dies but start again after 5-10 seconds. Bottom center wheel turns but nothing else will. Make one last attempt to start to look for issue and engine fires up right away.... still frozen belt. Turn engine off. Take it home and remove water pump, which is very hard to turn and after opening shows signs impeller blades coming part. Alternator turns freely. I also tried starting the engine for a few seconds w/out belt on and is hard to start... when does has rough idle and wants to die

Read allot of posts, but can't find anything similar to this. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I have an 00 2300V and I have ran into that a few times.
Whenever the engine has died slowly or rough, I will have the same problem. What is causing the problem on my boat is that the blades on the impeller get reversed when the engine quits rough and and some how reverses. The next time I start it, it is just too much resistance to turn the impeller in the right direction and the impeller will freeze and cause the belt to whine. Whenever I hear that whine, I know what has happened. I then have to take the water pump off and move each blade in the proper direction with a screw driver and put it back on.

      Thanks Monk!

Interesting... that may explain why it was locking up. I'll see what happens when I put the new water pump on tomorrow. Still not sure why the hard start/rough idle though???

Sounds like an ignition issue, have you checked all the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor? Is the timing set correctly? If you've had corrosion problems in the past I would look at the plug wires, pull the wires and use an ohm meter to check resistance, the lower the number the better.

Its possible you have more than one issue. if the new impellar didn't fix it, post back what the left-over symptoms are.

I'd be concerned that you screwed something up with the reverse polarity trick.

              Thanks jleger98

Yea that's what I'm concerned about. Impeller is back in and headed to get the alternator checked right now. Thanks for the help!

Well let me say this, when i pulled the reverse polarity stunt a few weeks back it cooked the altenator and i had to get a new one from DB Electrics.

It's possible you fried your ECM.

                    Update

Alternator was cooked. Still hoping I didn't get my ECM too. I found a new marine alternator, that should work, from a guy on Craig's list. Hope that's it, or I may be in for over $1k on an ECM.

As i was told when i posted unless the ignition was on then it should be ok, mine was.

Ouch. There is a guy out there who does marine alts really cheap....DB Electrics. People have been really happy with him. Razz??

Darn straight DB rocks! Mike at DB qouted me a price for my alt which i thought was real good. When it showed up it was $20 cheaper! Oh yeah, it works awesome too!

I can't speak highly enough about DB. If I ever need another alt for any application...it will be my first stop...no doubt about it.
