Re-prime fuel system

What's the secret to getting the fuel system to reprime after changing out the water separator. I burn off all the fuel in the filter, and never get primed. Do I have to remove the fuel lines and fill those as best as I can as well? BTW this is for those of us lucky enough to be running a carb with no fuel pump.

Unscrew the filter and fill with fuel then install.

Did that....it burns whats in the filter, and doesnt pull anymore in.

Sounds like the fuel pump is not sucking any fuel.

Don't think I have an electric fuel pump????

You should have a mechanical fuel pump on a carbed engine. Are you running the boat on a fakalake or at the lake? If at the lake try a little higher rpm to see if you can get the gas flowing a little faster with the mechanical fuel pump.

Fake a Lake....I ran it up to abour 1600 RPM, don't want to go much higher....I even rednecked the carb and poured in fuel to keep it running.

I think I lost all prime in my fuel lines when I had to de-idiot-ify the fuel separator that was on there. It was so tight I had to get a long pair of channel locks to get it off.

Thanks for the input. I think I am going to try to back fill all the fuel lines I can. the problem seems to be between my fuel flow meter, and the separator. I think that line is just full of air. I pulled the line off my pre-filter, and a little fuel came out there, so it has fuel to that point. If that fails, I may have to go out to the bayou with a can and see if I can just get it going with running the RPMs up. I also thought about installing a hand bulb temporarily to prime the lines. Problem was that I had to let it sit and drain while working that old filter off I know.

I hate mechanical fuel pumps.....I feel like I'm working on a 65 C10 or something.

Sound like there is an air leak somewhere between the pump and the pick-up in the tank. I would go back over all the fuel lines/fittings and make sure everything is clean and tight.

Yep...I think I may have a problem with my filter, or it may not be fitting correctly. Cheap-o walmart crap.

Can anyone cross reference this to come up with a suitable substitute? I think the filter just isn't sealing right, and I ain't gettin' no suction.

You can rub a small amount of oil on the gasket to get a good seal.

Got it....was the crappy fuel water separator. It had a secondary seal, and apparently that was keeping the inner seal from making a nice contact. Anyway, air leak is gone. Thanks for the input guys.
