emergency cut-off switch

Does your boat have one? My 2000 21V does not and I'm told by the Alabama Marine Patrol that I "MUST" have one. I've ordered one and plan to install it but I am curious if any of the Tige's come with them? Is it factory or dealer installed depending on state? This is the first inboard I've owned although I've been in several and every one had the lanyard hanging down by the throttle or off the dash.



Is there some bylaw I'm not aware of that says a boat of certain criteria is exempt? The marine police said "any boat under 24' and having more than 50hp"...


One more question. Anyone installed one? Did it hook into the ignition switch or did you have to hook something into the ignition system on the engine?

Emergency Cut-off Switch
No person shall operate or give permission to operate any vessel less than 7.3 meters (24 feet) in length, having an open cockpit and having more than fifty (50) horsepower, unless said vessel is equipped with an emergency engine or motor shut-off switch. The shut-off switch shall be a lanyard-type and shall be attached to the person, clothing, or personal flotation device of the operator. It shall be installed so that when any removal of the operator from the normal operating station will result in the immediate shut-off of the engine.

Any person operating a personal watercraft that does not have self-circling capabilities, must have a lanyard-type engine shut-off switch, which must be attached to the person, clothing, or personal flotation device of the operator.

Question- did you buy the boat in Alabama? It seems to me that if you bought it from a dealer, that they should have sold it to you with one installed... kind of like including a fire extinguisher.

I bought the boat from Ski Hut in Tennessee and yes Alabama has some lame boating laws and a few too many overzealous Marine Patrol. But luckily this guy was off duty and actually very nice.

It would make sense to me to put the switch inline with the purple ignition wire.

Well that is an idea.... hmm 24V.... I think I would have to upgrade the tow vehicle for that one... (Hey Honey! I need a 24V and a new F250...)


But for now... I got the switch installed this evening. I was prepared to drill a hole in the dash but on second thought decided to remove the cigarette lighter plug from above the key. Worked perfect, took maybe five minutes once I decided where to put it.

Kill Switch

It does seem AL is the only state that requires this switch. I do find it hard to believe that Tige is the only manufacture we have ever dealt with that doesn't install one from the factory. We always install them or pay Tige $50.00 to install them for us. I wish they did come standard, just an extra safety issue.
This maybe the norm in the ski boat industry, we have installed them on a few Correct crafts in the past.

The kill switch is only good if the driver connects it to themselves. This is a stupid law. I've been fishing in the ocean plenty of times, and only felt in danger enough to connect myself to the kill switch 2 times. On a lake, I can't see a reason for it. If the waves are so big that you may be thrown out of the boat, then no worries, a ski boat will probably be underwater shortly there after.

not that I advicate the law but let me explain the thinking that probably was used (and not that it applies to ski boat owners but we are the minority on most waterways....) - in a boat with an outboard motor if you are thrown from the boat the natural torque of a prop turning will infact turn the boat into a circle and in many instances has resulted in the driver being run over by his own boat and if it doesn't hit you the first time around remember it's in a circle until it runs out of gas.....

Our Marine Police also picked out the Cipa Ski Boat mirror as the only legal mirror for our state. Fortunately the Tige's come standard with them but Cipa had to gear up a clamp to fit several windshields. Also the cost is $89.95. What can I say tax dollars at work!

22 footer, I agree that bass boats and all high performance boat drivers should hook up their kill switches, I know my husband does in our Formula's when he knows he will be going 80+ MPH, also most of the Poker Runs now make the drivers do this. I think the biggest problem is our state laws haven't been updated since the 50's or 60's, and all they had back then was small boats with outboards. I know the only boats that could pass a decibel test today are the new 4-Stoke outboards, fortunately they don't enforce that one too much.

I thought Tige got around having to install kill switch by making their throtle spring back to neutral. Other boats I have had the trottle stays in one spot and there is a lanyard kill switch. My 2000 Tige trottle springs back to neutral if you let go - which I hate and would like to correct without cost of perfect passs right now.
