The old girl goes high tech!

With disc brakes! While doing winter maintenance i notice that the axle was chewed up from a previous owner/incident. I also found out i could get a complete axle with disc brakes from DHM fairly resonable so i did. Drove up to Sacramento at 5AM this morning I'm also adding a new actuator inner member, brake lines, misc bushings and I'll be good to go soon.

that is awesome! Man, I was going to completely rebuild the drum brakes on my axle but after seeing this I think I am going this route. Great pics.

I bet you could swap that complete axle in 1/2 the time it takes to do a brake swap.

Are you going to drop the boat while you do the swap.

And yes, swapping an axle is quite a quick process.

Drop the boat? If ya mean off the trailer, no. The rear is sitting on two six ton jack stands for support, definately not going anywhere!

Try this instead http://www.dhmtrailers.com. I was told electric brakes on a boat trailer are definate no-no. You might want to check that further.

So electric brakes on a boat trailer a no no? Anyone back this up? My friend has them on his in OK and loves it. Bigger boats and trailers all have the electric brakes. Can't see why it would matter as long as you have the contoller, which I do. I would think they are far better then surge since you can adjust when the brakes come on and intensity. Be nice for when your towing it down the pass and stuff you know?

Let me back up a minute. That's NOT what i heard now that i think about it. It was the cost factor that stopped me cold now that i think about it. It was something like twice the price, the actuator alone was around $500+ as it's actually a electric over hydraulic setup. Add everything else i needed, axle, brakes, etc and it was damn near double.

on i see, that could be. I need to find my data from back home. I swear I found a place to do one axle and it was like 300 bones. I'll look into it

Thanks Razz, I am really think that the disk brake setup is cheap. I have to completely redo my braking system anyway and switching to disc will be a big improvement. I am running "special" brakes right now (none).

Well if it makes you feel any better i was running "special" brakes too! I got the axle, springs and pads painted and new spring bushings in. I can't finds any galvanized spring hangers anywhere for the life of me though! I guess i can paint some raw ones for now. Hope to install Saturday if all goes well.
