battery wires

I have a dual battery installation in my 05 20V. I found a loose wire coming out of the wiring harness near the left battery that is black and has an inline filter in the wire. It would appear that this should be connected to the negative battery terminal.
Should I connect this wire to the negative terminal or just leave it alone? What does it filter?
