just replaced my steering cable today

Mine went out at 160 hours. Just changed it and it was no problem. Only thing I would add to directions in this thread is to tape the rudder end moving part to the jacket. This will keep the rope from pulling to extended position, making it shorter and easier to pull through hole.

The cable is "jacketed" by a black rubber cover (aka jacket).

To clarify, when you tie a rope to the end that connects to the rudder and pull it fully extents the end section. It is already about a foot long compressed and extends to two feet, making it difficult to pull back through cable path when extended.

Ok, I know exactly what you are talking about now. I didnt have that problem pulling the old one out, because it was so worn out it wouldn't pull out at all. I agree, that would definately help. For us the hardest part, besides unhooking the thing from the rudder, was fishing it through under the dash and into the bilge.
