i just purchased a 2001 21v w/ the scorpian power. admitting i'm a fool, i bought the boat without a test drive. i had driven across the state and didn't have the extra time to kill. i had talked with the mechanic that had just serviced (dewinterized) the boat, he said it ran great. looked good, ran good, good enough for me. i dropped the boat in the river the next day, it doesn't quite handle reverse like my old faithful bayliner sterndrive but managed to spin this beauty around and headed out. never driving or riding in a v-drive i knew this would a change. when i floored it, it made a rattling noise, not every time-but enough to bug me, when i eased on the power it seemed to disappear. it drove great over about 6-7mph, with the taps it seemed to easily hit 50. no cavitation after take-off. is this normal v-drive behavior? from reading the other questions i'm now concerned the shaft is bent. i know it has a new prop, a 14x18 1/2. she said it was replaced because of a shallow and sandy lake she lived on. i can turn the prop by hand, but not "spin" by any means. the closest tige dealer is 4 hours away, so i'm hoping to avoid a day behind the windshield. any comments are welcome, notice i used "fool" so f#cking idiot is still available.

if you have vibration, check the prop first, if it has the slightest bend or ding it will make the boat vibrate, as for reverse no inboard is going to turn without duel props.

Thank you, it does have a slight ding. I didn't think it was enough to feel but probably so. Is the prop & shaft supposed to spin freely or at least a couple of rotations by hand?

You should be able to turn it if it is not in gear, but it will not turn as freely as on an I/O.

the prop you have on that boat should be replace with an amce 13 1/2 x 16 1/2 or 13 1/2 x 17 1/2 those props are by far better then what is on there. this should help lessen the vibration. as for a bent shaft you should be able to spin shaft by hand 360 deg without any binding, but not spin freely . we have switched over to the amce props 2 years ago and have had no complants.

Mike, I have a 2000 21V which also came with the OJ 14x18.5. The prop was too big. Apparently it was kicking up sand/rocks and dinging the gelcoat. I replaced it with a new acme and there was a noticable difference in hole shot and it even helped shape the wake.

If you have any ding in the prop, you will feel it. Get it fixed, and you will be fine. Like banks said, no v drive will turn in reverse. This is because the prop does not turn. Since the prop doesn't turn, and while going in reverse the water is going the opposit way over the rudder, so you really can't stear. The only way to be able to stear would be if there was a rudder in front of the prop for reverse, or if the boat had the new stuff the jetskis have with water propulsion, or what ever they have going.
