    2003 21i starting issue

    Hey guys!

Had an issue with the boat today when i got to the lake. Always test it to see if i can get it to turn over before we dump it in the lake. It tried, but had no luck. Tested the battery and it was only showing 9.5v on the load target. Replaced that immediately and on the next turn it fired right up.

Turned it off and headed to the water. Normal routine, plugs in and such and when we got it floating on the trailer i tried to start it and it made this high pitched whine when the starter tried to engage. Nothing after that. No belts spinning, not sounds, nothing. Just the shrill high pitched whine that happens when i turn the key into start position. It has to be getting to start to make the noise. When i go from of to acc, i hear the pergect pass engage and the servo motor works, all my gages work fine, stereo runs fine.

I brought it back to town and have to locate a mechanic who can look at it. In the mean time, thoughts? I am concerned i burned up the starter. Not the end of the world. An planning on having whomever it is go over the whole engine while i habe it there just in case something else comes up.

Are you starting the boat out of water?

Everyone's description of "whines" are a little different but I would think that your pinion gear on your starter is not engaging the flywheel and free spinning causing a whine.

For what it's worth, this is the noise it makes:

I know it isn't a boat engine in the video, but it's one I quickly found with the same sound.

I know where the starter is - how hard is it to replace? Seems like I can source the part online for <$100 but I'm not sure about replacing it in my driveway.

Quick fix is to use penetrating oil and spin the starter with a screwdriver through the hole. But long term new starter.
