    Overheating due to broken belt

I was cruising when I noticed the motor sounded louder and then the temp warner screen came on. I went into neutral to check things out. The Serpentine belt had broken. It was late and I was about 300 yards from my dock. Limped in and checked the engine, there was smell like melted plastic or rubber. How can I tell it I did any damage to the engine? What else should I check out?

What boat do you have? Your belt probably broke due to a seized alternator pulley. Unfortunately, that requires a alt rebuild or new alt. the burned rubber smell could have came from the belt snapping after it spun on a seized pulley (most likely), or the exhaust couplings burning. Your engine is probably fine.

Glad you made it back 300 yards is lucky. Check all of pulleys like kx250frider said. See if they all spin freely. The fresh water pump might not spin by hand or at least take more exertion. When did you change the impeller last?
