    2001 21V Taps problem

I just bought a 2001 21v and the TAPS system isn't working. I keep reading on this forum about checking the inline fuse on an orange wire under the dash. I do not see an orange wire that has an inline fuse. Is it different for the 2001 model? I also keep reading about a 12v Relay for the TAPS. Is that for the 2001 model or a later model? There is a panel underneath the throttle that has a lot of pop fuses. Are one of these for the TAPS? I didn 't get any kind of user's manuals for this model and I do not know anything about this boat. Any leads to where I can get any manuals so I won't be so ridiculously lost?
    Thanks Karen

When you press the rocker switch on the throttle, do you hear the small electric motor running? If you can hear it, it's trying to push or suck fluid from the actuator. So if you can hear it, maybe your low on fluid, which is why the trim tab is not moving. If you cannot hear it, you might be on the right track with finding the fuse or another reason you're not getting power to the hydraulic power unit.

You can try looking up Bennett Trim Tabs. If all else fails, try giving Bennett a call. I've had great luck with them. I've had both actuators leak and they sent out free replacement o-rings both times. The number is 954-427-1400.

I'll also send you some manuals. I assume you have the 350 Mag?

Thanks Pow-Wake for the info and phone number! Yes I have the 350 Mag. I would appreciate the manuals! I can't take into the shop every time there is a problem if I can help it!

There could be a few reasons. 1st fuse, 2nd low fluid, 3rd wire in the control handle is pretty fragile, 4th is the control box itself. So start with the easy ones first fuse and fluid. To test the 3rd one you will need a probe wire. There will be a small grey wire that going to the control box that has a black, red, and white wire coming out of it. Jumper the small Black wire to the small red or small white see if you hear the pump kick on. If it does your wire going to the switch in your handle needs to be replaced. If it doesn't then the control box itself is dead. You can order a new one, or I can tell you how to make one yourself if you would like.

I am so glad I found this post. I have a similar issue with my 1998, 22i. TAPS went up and stayed up. Pump runs when depressing rocker switch up but nothing runs when it's down.
I filled the pump that wasn't too low and decided to test it manually with with wires straight from battery. I found similar results. It ran in both directions but with no movement from the plate. It was really struggling when trying to push the plate down.

          So is the actuators bad?
Did I also fry the relay in one direction when it locked up.

Thank you so much in advance for the help, and sorry for the long post.

I had to repair mine bordo380. I have a 2001 21v and my taps was doing the exact same thing. I also had an intermittent rocker switch which I replaced, gosh the solder job on the original was horrendous, surprised it worked at all.

I ended up first replacing the O-rings in both pistons and rebuilding them, and changed the left rear when looking at the back of the boat taps upper unit which has the sending rod/coils that the piston screws into. I then had to replace the actual taps hydraulic unit, water had gotten in the original pump and ruined everything. After changing out the pump everything works like new, the gauge and taps.

At the boats age, it probably makes sense to just replace the pump and O-rings if you expect to get good service out of it. Good luck.

My next project is my steering cable which is getting very difficult to turn.

Thanks for the response. I bought a relay to replace the current one and found I had pulled a wire off it doing another gauge repair. I feel dumb.

Let me know how the cable goes. Mine has been replaced but it's awful. It hangs up when turned all the way. I don't know if this is normal.
