2014 Z3 stereo channel reception terrible, Antenna?

I cannot get any stereo reception at all, a few local stations although reception is bad?

any ideas?

Climb in the port locker and look at the back of head unit to make sure the antenna is fully seated.

Is it typical that a stereo in a boat will not get station reception as good as in a car?

Yes, unless you have an external antena like a car, the antena wire is usually bundled or run under the deck where the back of the head unit is.
