    2009 RZ4

    Hey everyone,

Just wanted to see if someone can steer me in the right direction with a small issue that my boat is having.

    It's a 2009 RZ4 with the PCM EX343.

Boat starts fine, accelerates fine, tows fine etc. But I can hear what sounds like missing. It's not so noticeable while operating the boat. But if I'm standing on shore and someone else is operating the boat I can hear the sound more clearly out of the exhaust. (best described as a sputtering/missing noise)

Also when underway, the boat seems to change speed on its own. (in small increments) But just enough to alter the wake when surfing or boarding. It's rather annoying. Could this be caused by the speedo not working and the boat not knowing how fast it's going? I wouldn't think this is the case, but I'm not quite knowledgeable on the electronics on the boat. The speedo doesn't work when operating the boat, but when I went to the gauge diagnostics option on the menu the gauge needle will sweep back and forth as it's supposed to. Any ideas?!

    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

Sorry I missed your first post. Have you done any basic Mx yet? Have you replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, impellar? If so, and this is the first time it's acting up post winterization, make sure all the knock sensors are installed properly, 1 on each side, and make sure the spark plug wires are fully connected on the spark plugs. If you haven't touched them I would pull out, inspect and replace the spark plugs and look at the ignition wires and make sure there are no cuts in the insulation. After doing that simple stuff, then you're probably going to have to get the engine codes read by a mechanic.

        No worries,

I bought this boat at a very good price knowing that it was used in salt water and not really taken care of. I though I was going to have to get a new motor. I took it to a mechanic and had them look it over. They put in a new starter, batteries,
Spark plugs, wires, filters and fluids and it started right up. However they did not change the impeller.

Overall the boat has been running pretty good. It seems as if the "missing" noise happens after operating the boat for 20-30min now.

I did also full it up with 45 gallons of premium fuel and a couple fuel system cleaners.

Just kind of at a dead end here it seems.

          Agreed re engine codes.

Over octane fuel (premium plus cleaners) could actually cause your engine to run rough if the boat has always used low grade. In fact, the manual probably recommends NOT to use 90+ octane.

Change that impeller asap. While not causing the stutter issues, that is a problem waiting to disintegrate.

Only if the cruise is engaged I would figure. Have you inspected the paddle wheel under the boat for the speedo not working?

I would have the shop perform a compression check and then leak down test on any suspect low cylinders. I would also double check plugs and wires since you do not know if this suspect mis was there prior.
