    Gas pouring from vent

I am a new boat owner and have only taken my 98 pre2100 out a couple times so far. Yesterday I had to drive a pretty curvy road to get to the lake and I noticed that at certain times, like going downhill and then turning right, fuel would start pouring out the vent. I don't mean dripping, I mean pouring. During the 30 minutes or so driving over the hill to the lake I am going to guess I lost a couple gallons of fuel. I had filled up prior to heading out. Also, on the way home, after probably burning a 6 or 7 gallons of gas I noticed no such venting. It is a carbureted engine, with the fuel fill on the right and the vent on the left.

My question is, can someone tell me how these things vent? I assume there is some sort of check valve that keeps water from flowing back through the tube, but it would also seem that there should be something to keep large amounts of liquid from leaving the tank. I have been searching for some sort of parts diagram but have yet to find anything.

    Regards, Guy

I don't have a diagram, but I know what you are talking about. It happens only after you have filled the tank. I was told (by my dealer) never to fill the tank then drive to your destination. Fill it below full and top off on the water or just fill up on the water. I notice it if I fill it too full and have to apply the brakes fairly strongly.

Boats can not be filled to the top like a car can. Rule of thumb is to stop at about 90%. The trick is knowing when that is.

Congrats and welcome to the Tige community.

If you listen carefully, the gurgly sounds from the fill tube will change when the tank itself fills and the fuel level starts backing up the fuel hoses. Stop then, and you'll leave the fill hoses empty and the fill level down at the tank. You'd have to corner dangerously hard to make the level fill all the way up the hose at that point.

On my boat it is because the filler and vent tubes enter the tank on the transom end. Gas comes out of my vent even if it is storage. If I'm over 3/4 full I have to nose it down to store.

On our boat, it's because the vent is BELOW the fill fixture. I can't imagine why they did that. The vent would work just as well if it were above the tube, and having it above the tube would help prevent overflows like the original poster is experiencing.

Had this issue when putting the boat in the water after filling tank and occasionally I would notice it when just sitting. The dealer came up with a solution of adding a loop in the vent line. I have not noticed the problem since this change was made.
