    Boat turns over but wont fire!!

    So i charged my batteries and checked everything out. Everything is good to go. Took the boat out on saturday for a test/first run of the summer and the boat wont start!!!

    It turns over but wont fire up. I cranked it over for about 10 seconds at a time about 10 or 15 times....didnt want to keep going in fear of blowing up my starter or something else along those lines. What should i do or check to get her running? I was thinking about hooking her up to the hose in my drive way and trying to fire her up again like i did thinking it just might be the old gas or something but if that doesnt work what else can i check? Maybe shoot some carb cleaner in the carb for a lil boost of ignition?

    Please help me out with any suggestions you guys might have. Id like to keep from taking it to the shop for something simple.

    Are you certain the crankshaft is actually turning - i.e. that the bendix gear isn't just stuck and not engaging? Bendix gears have a habit of getting sticky while tucked away for the winter. If that's working:

    Confirm fuel is flowing.

    Confirm you have spark.

    If it's turning over at normal starting speed, those are the next two things to check.

      If your boat has one physically check the kill switch. I have been bitten by that in the past

        Thanks for the quick response guys!!! It was just a gummed up carb...Shot it with some carb cleaner and it fired up after a couple more cranks. Stoked it was an easy fix!!

          Did you just squirt it while still on the engine? If it was gummed up, it probably needs a thorough cleaning. You don't want to run that engine lean and end up with bigger problems.

              I'm glad you got it running. Did you replace the fuel filter/water separator? It can take quite a bit of cranking before it fills up with fuel. If you haven't replaced it then you should.

                So i guess i jumped the gun...i THOUGHT it would fire because at the time it started but i quickly turned it off due to not having water hooked up to the water pump...i got my water plunger and gave her a shot last night...now all it does is fire and dies but further investigation leads me to believe my fuel pump is bad! i took off the feed line and cranked her over to have NOTHING spit out....I already replaced my fuel filter/water separator but if the fuel pump no squirt, motor no start!!!! Now....how do i locate a part number? there are no numbers on the fuel pump. The boat is a 98 Tige pre 2002 with a 5.7L merc. Anybody have any ideas?

                  If its a mechanical pump, you can do a vacuum test on the inlet side. if its electric, is it running? If not, test with a volt meter.

                    if you still have the original flame arrestor on the top of the carb it will have your engines serial number on it. Once you have that parts are pretty easy to find here
