    No fuel to Mercruiser 350

    Having fuel issues with 98 pre 2002wt. Engine turns over and acts like it's going to start when I spray starter fluid into carb but won't continue running after about 2 seconds. Cannot hear fuel pump running when turning on key. Suspect possible fuel relay problem but cannot see where the fuel relay is to check it. A friend told me the lanyard could be unfastened but I cannot find where the lanyard is to see if it has fallen out. I didn't even know it had a lanyard. Any guidance on where the lanyard and fuel relay is on a 98 pre 2002wt or what else could cause this problem? Thanks.

    You don't have a safety lanyard.

    Fuel pump might be dead. Mine died a couple years ago. It sounded like it was dead though. Do you hear any sound at all?

      No sound at all. I took the boat out 3 weeks ago or so and she ran like a sewing machine. I always give it a start before hauling it into the water before any problems and that is when this all started. At least I can cut the lanyard out. Any easy way to test the fuel pump? I'd hate to fork out the money if I don't have to. Still wondering if there is a fuse or relay problem. I don't have a lot of technical knowledge on this though...

        Sounds like pump is dead. The relay should be on the back of the motor under the metal cover, but I'd almost bet pump over relay. Trace the fuel line to the pump and check to see if you have power to the pump to verify the relay. FYI if you have a fuel cooler the pump is under the plastic cover.

            My boat is set up different. See number 2 in diagram below for fuel pump. Would the water separator/filter cause this problem?

                Ya carb is set up little diff vs EFI

                Even with a clogged filter you should still hear the pump. Turn the key on and test the wires going to the pump with a test light to see if your getting power. If no power then there is a relay and fuse that should be located on the back of the engine

                    I've got the same one Ruger has, with the fuel cooler. $400 to fix.

                    When it died, it died between starts. It was running great, we stopped, shut it off and it never fired again. You could hear the pump sounding sick though. It would still try to prime but, it was very noticeably weak.

                      Fuse for the pump is located at the riser underneath a connector that has 6 wires going into it in a straight line, buncha different colors frem red to purple. There is a waterproof cap with a release on it, very easy to access but you don't see the fuses until you open the cap. Relay is one of three in the same general area, square top and here's the easy test. Leave the key in the "on" position and tap on each relay and then if that doesn't do it, disconnect each relay and then swap with the one next to it (they're the same so don't worry). If/when the fuel pump turns on and cycles, you've found the culprit. If the fuse is blown, suspect the pump is going south but replace the fuse and try again. If it blows again, replace the pump and regulator.

                        Thanks for all the response everyone. I found the relays and cleaned all the contacts. Upon further troubleshooting I noticed I get voltage readings at the fuel pump connection point as the engine starts to turn over. Initially I thought I would get a voltage reading simply by turning the key. I guess that's not the case and I suppose that shoots down the fuse/relay theory. I ordered a new pump and fuel/water separator. Looks like it's a bit cheaper for this set up but still no bargain deal. Ran me about $260. Hopefully this will solve the problem and I'll be back on the water. Parts should arrive by the end of the week...

                          Serial number please, possible oil pressure switch may be at fault.

                              Removed and tested old fuel pump. Was not functioning properly. Replacement of the fuel pump ressolved the issue. Thanks for all the help fellas.
