Transom Light Install

Anyone have experience doing this? I am a little nervous about drilling through the hull under the water line. Recommendations on sealers? Technique?

I did this last season. Piece of cake. Before drilling, count all the holes that have already been drilled. It'll help you realize the one tiny hole your about to drill ain't chit. Seriously. The total is was more than you think.

I used the 3M 3500 (I think). It's not the most hyper critical thing on the planet. Just take your time. Remember to run the drill in reverse on all your holes until you are through the gel coat. I usually sand the egde as well. Run you wire through as far as you can but still leave enough room that you fill the hole with sealant. One trick I use is to run the wire through a piece of tape fixed to the inside. This assures that you won't pull all the sealant out of the hole when you pull the rest of the wire through.

I was wrong. I used the 5200.

I used the 3M 4200. It is still water sealed and for use under the water line but can be disassembled if ever need be. The 3m 5200 is permanent bond from what I remember. You never know if you'll need to replace a light. Just my .02

Nicky covered the basic pretty good. 3M 4200 is probably the better choice as it is considered non-permanent. But, 5200 can be broken, just not easy. I would also add to place a bead of sealer around the wire hole and the mounting screw holes and a dab in the holes. As far as where to place the light, you need to know that you are drilling into the bilge and not the stringer area. Use thinks like the exhaust, lifting eyes and swim platform bolts to orient where you are going to come through.
