STARTING ISSUES?

I'm a new TIGE owner this summer. thought i was buying great shape well taken care of used boat. but starting out the summer with issues. i'm thinking the reason i'm having starting issues is might have something wrong with the shifter. even when in the neutral position the starter does nothing. batteries are new and fully charged. perko switch is in the right position and both batteries are switched on. anyways.... wondering if anyone has had trouble with tige's shifter/ignition system? and if there is a quick fix?

A 12V test light is the best tool for tracing this down. Possible causes could be:
Ignition switch
kill switch
neutral safety switch
starter relay
starter solenoid

I had this same issue a few years back on my 04 switchv with a marine power 5.7
The problem was not the throttle lever or the neutral switch. The problem was a $5.00 relay.
There is a relay (standard 12 v 20 amp auto zone parts) that inline before the starter. It is mounted on top of the engine, under the plastic cover. It almost look as to be an afterthought, they way it was wired.

I spent a lot of time trouble shooting from the helm back to the engine, just to find it at the last place, so I would start at the relay. You can test to see if you are getting 12 volts at the relay when in trying to start (it the relay get 12v on the coil, this should pull in the contacts and the engine should turn over)

Also, there's a neutral safety switch in the shifter that sometimes takes a dump. Easy to check: with the shift lever in neutral, turn and hold the key in the start position while slightly moving the shift lever forward and back. If the starter momentarily engages during the wiggling of the shifter, the neutral safety is to blame. You'll have to remove the shifter assembly from the mount and replace the switch with a new one. If it doesn't try to start, start looking at the relay or directly on the starter itself is a 90amp slow blow fuse. It looks like a square white piece of plastic where the positive battery cable connects and then the other side is bolted to the starter positive. Keep us posted.

I have a similar problem but my starter should be fine since I just changed it. I changed the neutral sensor that is screwed into the transmission. I also changed my batteries. The kill switch (coiled red wire with a clip to clip onto your clothes) is fine. Whitlock87 - where do you find the relay? I've taken a photo of the top of my engine with the plastic cover off. The first thing you can see is the flame arrester. Where is the relay?

The relays are located just above the distributor UNDER the ECM mounting bracket. There should be one for starting, one for the fuel pump and one for the ignition. They're all the same so remove, check contacts for corrosion and other issue and re-install. You can swap relays too, they're all the same. The shifter lever you have does not have the neutral safety but for those reading, if it did it would be behind the shifter itself, located on the backside near the cable connections.

Hi Boatwakes

I've attached some photos of what may be the starter relay. Its seems to be attached to the back of the metal plate where the ECM is located. I've taken photos of the top and at the bottom, I'm pointing to what I think is the relay. If that is not right, when I remove the ECM plate entirely there is another electrical piece just underneath the ECM plate. Which is the right relay?

The starter relay will have two yellow with red stripe wires coming out of it, that is the actual wire that sends signal to the starter post. What exactly are your symptoms? AND to be sure it's not the neutral safety switch at the transmission, remove both of the yellow with red stripe wires leading to the switch and connect them together on a single post of the safety switch, this will temporarily bypass the neutral safety AND also allow the engine to start in gear SO BE CAREFUL THAT YOURE IN NEUTRAL WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY TO START!!! If the boat starts every time, there may be a physical problem with the shifter detent inside the transmission. Keep us posted.

2017 Tige R22E No Start when key turned clockwise from ignition setting to starter position. Nothing occurred at all 9 out of 10 times (no sound). 1 out of 10 times it fired up.

I replaced the key ignition with a generic BEP 4 position switch ($20). This wasnt difficult if you take a picture before diassembly. This didn't fix it.

I replaced the 20A starter fuse under the engine cover in the fuse box at the top of the engine boat front. This didn't fix it.

I replaced the starter relay (pull out the little cube with pliers; labeled on top of fuse box) with a generic replica from O'Reilly auto parts store ($13). This immediately fixed the problem. The cheap chinese relay had failed, so new cheap chinese part installed. Next steps would've been the neutral switch assembly check detailed by other posters and further troubleshooting of the actual starter.
