How screwed am I? Cracked Block

So I was having such a good day, dewinterized and put new plugs in. Started right up and ran great on the fake a lake, no problems.......ahhhhhhh then I saw it!.. What a weird spot for a crack, in the immortal words of Jeff Spiccolli "My dad's a TV repairman, he's got an ultimate set of tools, I can fix it". Can I or am I smoking like Spiccolli? I think I'm going to drink a beer and go lay down under the boat for a while.....

I'm pretty sure you are going to need a new block, Where do you live? Who winterized it for you? If you had a shop do it they are liable.

if your oil isn't a milkshake, I'd be tempted to jb weld that and see how much more time you can get out of it.

You will need a new block/engine, your insurance may pay for it, depends on the carrier, (Triple A will not, Boat U.S. will) but expect a grenade as your cylinder wall(s) are certainly distorted and the pistons are then changing shape and sooner or later you'll rub a hole in the cylinder or the hyper eutectic pistons will turn to shrapnel...

There is more than one crack there and one of them is going right through the knock sensor port. I would guess that block is toast. I doubt it will work on that knock sensor crack, but you might as well try jb weld or liquid steel on it of you want, you can't mess it up anymore than it is. The thing is that it probably cracked out the inside of the block also...

It could be made worse if it grenaded. It would turn a short block into a long block. Maybe you have to buy a long block anyway. IDK?

Fwiw- I had a similar issue a few years ago with my old boat 92 drirect drive (damaged looked the same). After doing some further exploring I found additional cracks into the valley which meant a new motor for me. I would not jb weld it. I would start pricing out new long blocks. I was also able to transfer all of my electronics, starter, etc which helped the bottom line too. Good luck!

Coming from someone with experience of being an idiot and not properly winterizing engine it's gonna cost you 2250 for a long block then probly around 7-8 hundred to get it put in. 3 thousand is roughly the magic number. I guarantee you if u take your boat to the lake and put your engine under a load you will have milky oil. JB weld will not do anything, you may as well save the 15 bucks or whatever it costs because you will need it.

Hey that looks all too familiar...

I was in your shoes three years ago. If the block is cracked there, it also cracked inside the valley under the intake manifold.

I think I paid about $2300 for my rebuilt block and heads. A fellow Tige' owner and I installed it in a day.

                    Good luck!

Pull the heads and check it out before attempting marine tex or jb weld. I think you are going to find that you need more than duct tape and super glue once you get the heads off.

After much discussion and internet searching I think I am going to try the lock n stitch metal stitch. I saw the exact break on the same engine and the repair was done in the boat with the exhast manifold pulled. I ran the motor for twenty minutes and no water in the oil. Said it would be about 300 to try. Keep your fingers crossed

Pulled the motor and took to a guy who's been doing this for years. One week later and $425 lighter it's back in the boat working fine. Three hours of surfing and not a drip or problem. Never was any milky oil and was limited to the low pressure water passages. Guess this technology has been around for years and is used alot on heavy equipment and large motors.
