    Impeller Housing / Wearplate

Quick question for the experts on this site. I'm changing out the impeller housing, impeller, wear plate and o-ring on my Merc 350. I noticed that the impeller change instructions in the 'How To' section mentions an o-ring on the back side of the wear plate. It seems like the o-ring will cause the wear plate to warp once tightened down. The flywheel assembly also seems like it has a built in rubber o-ring. When I took the raw water pump apart, there was not an o-ring. Based on the attached pictures, do you think the o-ring is necessary?

You must remove the old oring from the shaft seal in order to install the new one. It is not always necessary to change that oring but it's up to you. Usually the housing breaks before the oring and bearing go and that's on most of the salt water boats we work on with the boat stored in the water. Good luck!
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

So do I have to disassemble the bearing housing assembly to replace the small o-ring in the picture above? Or do I have to pry off the rubber gasket and the 'quad ring seal' is below it?

It doesn't go inbetween the wear plate and housing assembly (like in picture 4) right?

Sorry, not terribly mechanically inclined, so I'm learning on the fly.

Also, the boat is stored at my house and only been in fresh water. Is it too much trouble and a step I should just skip for now?
