    Belt squeal under load

I have a 98 Tige 2200V with 350 MPI mercruiser in it. It has an irritating squeal under load. That is, at idle it is nice and quiet. When I hit the throttle I get what sounds like a belt squeal coming from the engine. I have not been able to isolate it.

I have changed belts several times. It has relatively new alternator (2 yrs old) New water pump (2 yrs old) and I change the impeller every season.

    Any thoughts on it?

    Thanks

Is there power steering on your boat or another belt driven pump that could be going bad?

No power steering. Seems like it has been around for a while. Sometimes louder than other times. Have replaced quite a few things on the belt side of the engine without really stopping it

I have the 350 Mag too and the belt only started making noise when the belt started to split. I know you mentioned that you have changed the belt before, but check it over really well. Mine had a small split that went undetected by me for a couple of weeks.

Another thought. How about the tension pully? That could be the culprit. No real basis, just throwing things out there that you haven't already replaced.

I just noticed the alternator bracket has a tiny crack in it. Could it be flexing and causing squeal?

I had the alternator bracket crack too on my 99, but check the idler pulley, if you have not replaced it yet, do so and weld the bracket too. Good luck!

Similar issue on my 97. Turned out the alignment on the raw water pump was off a bit. I found a black belt powder residue around the hoses and water pump. I also had to deglaze the pulleys with some scotch brite after, but quiet now. Replaced the belt too. good luck!

                  merc idler pulley

Some merc 350 mag engines have a larger idler pulley available to allow for more belt tension. I don't have the service bulletin number with me, but if you call a mercy dealer with your serial number they should be able to find it. If you run out of belt adjustment, you may want to look into it.
