So i have a 1998 2200i with the 350 mercruiser and last I had some problems with overheating. I changed out the impeller that was shredded and didn't think anything about it. Well first run yesterday did the samething. It's not too bad if you are running across the lake. If you are sitting still it will overheat. It does do quite a bit of fluctuating. Any ideas on where to start looking???

When you changed out the impeller you said it was shredded. Were you able to look all around and get all the parts? There have been others that thought they had it all out but parts were still in there causing it to over heat. -
I agree with Skippa, retrieving all the impeller parts is crucial. In many cases, they end up caught in the trans cooler and restrict the flow.
Also, if your Merc has the composite/plastic impeller housing, it may be time to replace the housing. When the engine is cool (water is to hot when engine is warm), pull off the hoses on each side of the trans cooler and reach your finger in each side to check for debris, this is a place that things like to lodge and overheat the trans and or engine. Also check the trans fluid, it usually needs to be changed after you over heat. I don't have a pic of the trans cooler but will be working on the boat tomorrow if you want me to snap one.Comment

I cannot imagine why it was overheating......... New impeller and i should be in business. Thank you all so much for you info and knowledge. That was probably a $500 repair at a boat shop.Comment

Ya! That's one of the best I've ever seen. That second pic is just magical.
You might want to replace the housing after something like that. If it eats another one, you definitely need a new one. If not, you should plan on it next season.
I remember my first (and only) impeller blow up like it was yesterday. Ah, memories.
