    Engine

I have a 2000 21i with a Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI engine, I wondering if anybody knows if this engine has smart capabilities? Meaning will it start to shut down clyinders and reduce exposure to damage when there is a rise in tempature or drop in oil pressure or any other damaging conditions.

I was out Sunday and out of know where the engine over heated and then I lost all oil pressure. So I'm hoping that the engine is like the one in my '02 Chevy Tahoe and has some brains to it.

    Thanks for any help, Joe

P.S. It really sucked getting towed in by an old school bayliner

Could have been worse. When my impeller went out, I got towed in by a 4 foot john boat. Thankfully no one had a camera

As far as your engine question, I don't have the answer in front of me since I'm at work. If no one gives you a reply today, I've got the service manual at home and I'll look it up.

Well, I looked all through my Mercruiser service and owners manuals - nothing there. Neither manual was very specific about the electronics though. Just how to test each component to see if it's bad. Maybe one of us should call Mercruiser?

The smart program was not introducted till 2003, however there is a buzzer that should go off and give you a warning sound if the temp gets too hot or if the oil presure drops below 7 psi. This is the sound that you hear everytime you start the engine. MerCruiser's number is 405-743-6555 if you would like to call them.

I called Merc this morning as was told by that the engine has the audible alarm (which I heard and of course then shut everything down) but it also has a element which takes the engine down to 4 cylinders instead of all 8 in order to reduce exposure. This was obvious good news to me, the good people at the Corona Tige dealership agreed to look at the engine tommorrow morning.

Everything worked out fine, new impeller and water pump and I'm back in buisness. Engine (per the dealer) is just fine, I'll be out on the water this weekend if it's not too cold.
